It was the foggiest day on record at the Kings House Sports Ground, Chiswick. The new sign “Kings House Sports Ground – home of Kensington & Chelsea FC” was proudly displayed at the ground entrance, just to let BP know they were coming to the home of “West London’s most talked about Veterans Football Team”.
In the searing heat of West London, Kew staged a magnificent comeback to nick a draw despite Kenchels enjoying a 4-1 lead. It was hot – really, really hot – more like the South of France than Chiswick. Indeed, Corrie refereed in his beach shorts in such a laid-back fashion he was only one step away from pulling out a deckchair.
Teddington must have wondered what they had done to offend the gods this morning. Walked under ladders? Broken their shaving mirrors? Opened umbrellas indoors? Done something unseemly to a black cat?
This was more than a game of two halves; it was a game of two keepers too. Ours, the magnificent, incomparable, glorious, Shiltonesque Goodheart and theirs – a jelly legged womble who gifted the Chels a perfect start with two soft goals.
As the great right-back of Avon once said, all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women in it merely players. This was, to say the least, an outstanding Kenchels performance – possibly even a theatrical one if Alex and Jake’s banter in the green room afterwards is anything to go by.
