2009-10 Season

A game to remember…

How very fitting that on Remembrance Sunday, we should have our very own Mr Memory reffing the game. Yes, ‘Pierluigi Newbods’ was in charge for the first half and had EP fretting even before we kicked off. Our leader  had visions of the two-minutes’ silence on the centre-circle over-running by 88 minutes, with Newbs forgetting to blow his whistle to end it and possibly adding extra-time!

Fortunately, the medication is working and Newbs had an excellent half – depriving EP of the opportunity to ‘do a Fergie’ and rant about the quality of modern refereeing.

We got off to a truly horrendous start. Suffice to say, the Imps – who’d started brightly – were quick to take advantage and scored six minutes in, after Alex sliced the ball in midfield and gifted it to Imperial.

So one-nil down and it really looked like we could have a repeat of last week’s performance against  Brentham on our hands. The Imps were fast coming forward and forced a couple of excellent saves from Craig, who managed to keep us in it until half-time.

My favourite moment was a outrageous Stevie B comedy classic in which he played the ball across the face of goal from the left-back position, past a disbelieving Craig and a couple of Imperial forwards.

Steve’s rationale for this kamikaze action was that he had no options. No right foot would be more accurate. Wayne meanwhile was in no position to criticise, after a death-defying backpass moments earlier.

I’m really not sure what changed the game in the second half – of course, I came on for El Tel, which may have had something to do with it. It was the irrepressible Tommy T who scored – again – to bring us level, delicately lobbing the keeper after a Jake break forward.

The second goal was probably the killer, when Alex broke free and beat the advancing keeper. The Imps saw the game slipping away from them and applied not inconsiderable pressure.

One free kick could have given them a goal but for Craig’s hand, Robin’s head and the bar I think stopping them (nobody is quite sure what that sequence was!).

Stevie B slotted a third – from a well placed corner that connected with their defender’s head on the way in at the near post. And the coup de grâce was administered by Jake who broke free, carved up their defence and slotted a fourth towards the end.

So that’s it. El Tel, rather rashly, is now off for three weeks at the Hanoi Hilton, leaving his place in the side very much in doubt. EP is trialling  a number of new players, one or two of whom are apparently very good stand-up comedians, Tel, so you should be very worried.
