2006-7 Season

Bank of England 0 Kenchels FC 1

The Mighty ‘Chels can take considerable credit for this hard-fought win, in which we gave a sterling account of ourselves against a BoE side who looked increasingly bankrupt as the game went on.

The opening minutes were as tense as an internal audit, with both sides trying to use the width of the pitch to advantage. Chances were fairly evenly distributed, with Robin, John Murphy and Alex causing the most damage in their box.

At our end, they had a few chances – most notably from a string of corners – but Tel, Steve and Wayne did their bit, as did Craig, who made three great saves in the first half – including at least one full-stretch flick around the post.

As the half went on, the ‘Chels looked more and more comfortable and it was BoE who were looking bankrupt of ideas.

At half-time, and with the rain coming down, the boss brought on myself, Luis, GB and Tommy Taw (back after injury). BoEhad taken off their No9, a big lad who’d been holding the ball up well, and this seemed to weaken them. We had several chances quite early on, including a couple of sitters that we’d have banked any other day of the week.

The goal eventually came from a nicely worked move that started with Stevie B, who lofted the ball to Alex to swerve around two defenders before passing to Jamie, who deposited it nicely in the bottom right corner. Shortly afterwards, Tom B hit a tremendous volley into the back of the net only to have it ruled offside.

Luis was short-changed a few moments later when he weaved through the defence only to bang the shot wide.

At the other end, Craig was magnificant making thoroughly reliable calls and going courageously down to thwart attacks. He even did a bit of dribbling at one point and was unanimously voted Man of the Match.

As the game drew to a close, it was clear that they were losing interest (Tel, geddit?) and when the final whistle went, they knew they’d been squarely, fairly beaten. You could say we’d kept them in cheque.

This brings our current run of victories to four on the trot. Next week Old Salesians. Will it continue? OF COURSE IT WILL!!!!
