Three on the trot! That’s the way to do it. Even without their most creative and insightful player (on special duty in Silicon Valley) the Mighty ‘Chels banged out a narrow victory over the Japanese. Are we on a roll?
Possibly. Speaking personally, I am on a cheese roll and the hospitality here is threatening my girth – sorry berth – at right-back. EP’s notes – which I am just rehashing – made this game sound a bit like Bridge on the River Kwai.
You know the sort of thing, totally dotty officer type (EP)leads long-suffering team to unexpected victory to the amazement of his long-suffering adjutant, Capt Newbwan…along the way, there are comic cameos from the daft but loveable Sgt Stevie B, thoughtful reflection from the erudite Major Mike Power and a powerful finale in which the entire midfield explodes, snatching a poignant victory over the evil Japs from the jaws of defeat.
As you can tell, I am warming to my theme…however, I am led to believe that it may not have been quite that dramatic. Indeed, I suspect the details may have been entirely falsified for my benefit and you lost 3-0.
Anyway, from the details I have and for posterity’s sake…
This was a workaday win for the ‘Chels. Pretty even throughout, we had the better chances in the first half but the Japs always looked dangerous on the break.
Luis had two good shots and there were half chances for Alex and Robin. Early in the second half, we had more opportunities for Euan and Alex before a ball sat up nicely in the area for Jamie to volley home.
The Japanese came back with a 15 minute period of pressure where, but for some fine keeping by MK ‘Unconcussed’ Power and a little wayward shooting by the Japanese front two, we could have conceded three goals (and probably would have if I’d been at right-back, eh?).
Alex held the ball up superbly throughout, turned his man repeatedly, and caused loads of problems for their two left-sided defenders…everything but a goal!
Mrs Murphy – who hasn’t forgotten his shenanigans with the Japanese no. 14 from a couple of seasons ago – lifted his game accordingly. He was sticking his feet in here, his arse in there, chin over here and so on. You can’t fault his tireless running and his superb balls (that’s what the boss said!).
Talking of tireless running, Tom B is rapidly becoming the new Forrest Gump. The boy just kept running up and down the right, closing the Japanese attack down one minute and whipping in a fine cross at the other end a minute later.
Man of the match is a close call between the boy Kirwan and MK Power, who never put a foot wrong and fully deserved his clean sheet after playing for most of the game with an aggravated groin strain.
Apparently, someone said Wayne had a terrific game. Now I know you’ve been making it up!
The lineup: Mike P, Chris N, Wayne, Steve, Jamie, Tom B, John, Luis, Euan, Alex, Robin. Subs: Tom T for Newby; Chris M for Robin.
