The Hairdressers looked a cut above the ‘Chels as we trotted out at Gunnersbury Park for our last fixture of the domestic season.
The opposition had an average age of 14 or thereabouts and even in the warm-up were doing things with the ball that would probably leave any one of us in knots. And so we kicked off.
As expected, it was a hard half for us. They were very fast and a couple of them could turn on a sixpence – personally, I couldn’t turn on a helicopter landing pad.
Our midfield had a lot of running to do, and mostly in our own half. Thankfully, the boy Stephen B was back and on top form and swept up most of what the Hairdressers had to offer – and if he didn’t stop it, then Dave Goodheart got a knuckle to it.
There was one moment early on though when they hit the crossbar once and then did it again on the rebound that made me feel from the touchline that we were living on borrowed time.
Amazingly, as the game went on, our confidence grew and EP, Euan, John M and Alex started moving between the Hairdressers with some nifty one-twos. When the half-time whistle went, we were still nil-nil and with all to play for.
As the second half opened, it was suddenly the Hairdressers who were caught short, back and sides. Suddenly it was us bossing the midfield and their lack of organisation gave us the freedom we needed.
Wave after wave – that’s like a wave in your hair, geddit Terry? – of ‘Chels attacks had their goalmouth under siege. As the ball came across from a Stevie B corner, Euan blasted it into their net from a very tight angle. Great goal!
At the other end, Stevie B was handling their forays forward quite comfortably. There were a couple of scares late on however, with yours truly saving the day at the last moment.
And so the domestic season comes to an end. We finished up with a long lunch at the Nelson with wives and families. Krakow beckons…
The lineup: Dave G, Andy Jacob, Stevie B, Tom T, Euan, Mike P, Gavin, Tom B, John M and Alex. Subs: Dot, Luis and GB on for Mike P, Robin and Gav?
