2005-6 Season

NPL 2 Kenchels FC 2

Another week, another disappointing outcome for the unlucky ‘Chels. No surprises, really. We did, after all, have the self-styled Greatest ‘Chel of All Time playing for us and Stevie B coaching from the touchline. Arf, arf. Or should that be Arif, Arif?

Anyway, the real talent was on the bench for the first half. Myself and Wristy Morgan, fresh from the exotic delights of downtown Brum, watched delightedly as the ‘Chels went one up after 15 minutes or so. It was a beautiful move, which began at the back, flowered into a series of slick passes (may even have involved the GCOAT) until it was held up by EP outside their area who, with perfect timing, released young Ben to score.

Excellent start you may be thinking. Indeed, this is a team we ought to beat and we seemed to have the upper hand. So the wind was set fair. And talking of wind, I felt that a small visit to the lavatory might be in order so off I trotted. Imagine my surprise, dear reader, when I returned to find that we were now 2-1 down! Not only had I had a dump, but the poor old ‘Chels had been cruelly dumped upon.

Their equaliser, I was told, came from their first break. Their second shortly after a Wayne backpass was intercepted. So at the interval we were in that position so familiar to us this season, trailing by a single goal.

Anyway, the talent came on for the second half and – it has to be pointed out – they did not put another one past us. It also has to be said that chances at the other end were not that many or that clear cut.

On top of that we had to cope with a rather odd ref who seemed to be measuring feet in metres. The ‘Chels perserverance paid off eventually though when Tom G went on a mazy run around the right of their box and ended up getting taken out. It was a clear free kick but a couple of their players thought not – and there was an amusing interchange between them and our own Stevie B (it ended with one of them telling him he looked better with his glasses on!).

Tom G remained nonplussed and slotted the free kick beautifully around the wall and into the net. And that is how it finished. On a serious note, Arif, Gav and EP in particular played some nice football – and Craig pulled off a couple of great saves, not least one in the first half when he turned it off the post.

Other items of note. Mr New-b-wan now has a new nickname, Rainman, after recognising a pair of shorts by their fading trademark 16 years after he and they parted company. I also took some stick over my dress sense from Arif (yeah, that’s right!). I also have a new nickname, Snowman, but haven’t a clue why?
