Another week, another defeat but it was a tight game that we might have nicked had we been tighter at the back or had put more chances away at the other end. God I just read that opening sentence back to myself, it could’ve been written by Ron Manager, isn’t it. Anyway back to the action.
Dicky, Dogger, Donny and co always give us a rough ride in every sense and this encounter was no exception. ‘Chels looked good going forward however and about 15 minutes in Gav got his bonce to an Alex corner and we were one-up (some disupute over whether Brymah can claim it since it boinged off some part of his anatomy on the way in).
To be fair, Meadhurst had been pretty quiet up to this point but the goal seemed to galvanise them (or should that be Gavin-ise them?) and they slowly upped the pressure. About halfway through, one of their guys took the ball down just inside our penalty area, turned beautifully and put a dream shot past newbie keeper, Scott.
One-all, game on. There was very little fahkin’ about from Meadhurst but there was a lot of ‘off the ball’ stuff going on as well as a little ‘on the ball’ stuff. One corner in particular saw an outbreak pushing and shoving in our goalmouth and Euan was floored after a Meadhurst elbow connected with his gut.
There was a niggly period of about ten minutes after this but the ref dealt with it reasonably enough. Scott demonstrated his skill in goal with a couple of decent saves as well as a superb piece of dribbling up to the center circle that left us all thinking: “Oh f***!” Late on in the half, Brymah broke through and just as he was about to put the ball in the back of the net, the ref blew half-time.
You could almost hear every ‘Chel on the pitch mouthing “I don’t believe it!” Victor Meldrew-style. So it should really have been 2-1 to us at the break but it wasn’t. Bummer.
The second half kicked after some cautionary words from the ref regarding feet up tackles (mostly from them it has to be said). Newbods and Stewart pulled themselves off (yeah, but it makes me laugh every time I say it) to be replaced by me, Luis and Tommy T.
Fairly early on, I inanely gave away a corner instead of putting the ball out to the right. As the ball came across, they got a head to it and it sailed over the line – with about half a dozen ‘Chels watching it. Two-one to them.
Our equaliser was an absolute belter from EP, struck superbly from just outside their box which screamed past their keeper. In response, they got a third from a corner and we were up against it. Three-two to them but we were still pressing them hard and there were moments of panic in their defence as they failed to clear.
Eventually, Alex managed to nick one back (Sorry Alex, I have lost all record of what happened for that one) and it was three-three with all to play for.
We had a myriad of chances but were dogged by bad luck – Gavin in particular had one strike cleared off the line. But it was all over when they got their fourth, despite our best efforts. I can’t remember how they scored the final goal but it was a killer blow that came quite late on.
At almost the last kick of the game, the boy Wayne surged forward and hoofed a loose ball up the pitch – it went up so high that there was ice on it when it came back down and bounced frustratingly off their crossbar.
If only it had gone in…only it didn’t, eh Wayno! Frustrating indeed but there were some good performances from EP, Euan, Gavin and Alex and also Scott who – despite the scoreline – was tremendous in goal.
The lineup: Scott, Terry, Wayne, Brymah, Euan, Gav, John Murphy, Stewart, Alex, Subs: Den for Brymah, Luis for Stewart, Tom T for Newbwan.
