2005-6 Season

Weirside Vets 4 Kenchels FC 2

A minute’s silence before kickoff gave us all a chance to reflect on the tragic events of the last fortnight. It was good to see so many ‘Chels – even those who could not play – turning out to pay their respects following the sad loss of Rory, Robin’s son. I’ve had several opportunities to feel proud of my fellow ‘Chels in recent days, and this was yet another.

EP would have been proud of the way we started the game too. Within a few minutes, John Murphy broke through from the left and slotted one home from an incredibly tight angle. Ten minutes later Alex slammed a second in from the edge of the box.

Two-up against Weirside (aka Lensbury) is unheard of. This lot are a very good side and we had caught them napping. They came back strongly and we found ourselves under the cosh. An unlucky Wayne conceded a handball in the box and the ref blew. After Craig’s recent fantastic penalty save, we could not have hoped for a repeat but guess what? He did exactly that. Superb.

So we were off the hook – but only temporarily. Shortly after that incident, and with the ball pinging all around our area, they slammed a wicked one in that we failed to clear. Two-one.

The pressure continued relentlessly in the second half. Ten minutes in, a belter of a shot from outside the box took a vicious deflection off Wayne’s shoulder and left Craig a hair’s breadth from stopping it. Two-two.

At the other end, we were making some decent opportunities but failing to capitalise on them. A series of one-one-ones by Alex failed to deliver and there were other decent chances for Euan and Gav, among others. But as the game wore on, tiredness set in and we were attacking less and less.

Gav stopped one of their guys breaking through a few yards outside our box but the ref gave a free kick. It sailed beautifully over our wall and into the net – again with Craig close, but just not close enough. Three-two.

The finisher was the result of a one-on-one that came out down our left. So final result was four-two to them. At least it wasn’t three-two, eh?
