The poor old ‘Chels started brightly, went two-up but imploded and ended up losing three goals to two in this game…hang on. ‘Isn’t that last week’s report?’, I hear you say. No, dear reader, sadly this week was almost an action replay of the game against Meadhurst.
This week we wuz mugged again, despite playing some fine football and having a teeming multitude of clear chances on goal.
It was a very blustery day at the CSSC Stadium of Lights as we trotted out. Some wag – I think it was the boy Tweaky – quipped something about making sure the score was 3-2 in our favour this time. Talk about tempting fate.
Indeed it was Stevie B who put us one up early on. The move started with one of his corners, which got knocked back out to the right flank where he picked it up and put in a delightful cross – sorry, a well placed shot – that sailed in from a tight angle. In that first 15 or 20 minutes, they scarcely crossed our halfway line. We were carving them up down the left and right flanks. Gav was winning everything in the air and all was set fair.
Then from out of the blue, the Popes come thrusting forward. The geezer got around Steve and Tel to fire his cross in from the left. It came in two inches above my head. I rose like a winged Pegasus into the air…unfortunately, my shiny new silver boots only let me rise one and a half inches to meet the ball. Consequently, they headed home. One-all.
That goal rocked us and our game suffered, the crisp passing fading away. They scored their second shortly before half-time, a header from a corner this time. So there you go, two attacks and two goals.
We came out fighting at the start of the second half though. Once again, we were all over them. There were shots and crosses firing in from all directions. Gavin, Alex, Luis, John Murphy and Robin were all in the thick of it but the ball wouldn’t go in the net.
They cleared it, the scrambled, they struggled. Their keeper made a couple of decent saves….eventually, Gavin slammed a volley home from inside the box. Two-two. We were on the rise, bossing midfield, solid at the back. They cleared three off the line at least and we had to win this one didn’t we, only a matter of time. Not to be.
About ten minutes from the final whistle, Wayne misses a clearance, the ball runs through and their forward gets there before Dave G. Three-two. And that’s how it finished, with the ‘Chels totally mugged. We were so gutted that if they’d taken our wallets as well we probably wouldn’t have noticed.
PS: My boots are now at the menders having the lead taken out of the soles (as opposed to having the piss taken out of them by my teammates).
