A depleted ‘Chels trooped out of the players tunnel as a bare 11 for this clash of titans on Stevie B’s home turf.
There was no Stevie B however, no Wayne, no Terry, Mrs Murph or Jake. So in other words, a positive result was always on the cards.
We were also blessed with the presence of Jamie – who EP described later as a ‘cultured centre-back’ (are you listening Wayne?) and also the refined aerial skills of New-b-Wan, who excelled at left-back. Without a regular keeper, we also had Tommy ‘The Cat’ Taw between the sticks again.
From kickoff, we scarecely put a foot wrong. Our passing was crisp and our movement excellent. There were some drop-dead-gorgeous first-time balls and tidy little one-twos in midfield and at the back.
Our first goal came about ten minutes in when Alex fired a shot inside the box. The keeper had it covered but it hit a defender and went in. Own goal.
Our second came shortly after. It was a Euan header from – I think – an Alex corner. The third came from Robin, who ‘shinned’ in the rebound from a Euan shot.
Woburn struggled to keep in the game. They had a couple of chances and Tom T went down bravely at least twice and New-b-wan headed another off the line. But Woburn’s final ball was always suspect and while they moved up the pitch well, they rarely got into our box.
The goal that finished them off came not long into the second half. Luis set up Jamie, who beat two defenders inside their box before slotting it home. At this point, Woburn heads really dipped.
The fifth was an absolute belter from Gavin. It came from Euan run down the left which ended with him chipping the ball in for Gavin to ‘dolley-volley’ in. Shortly after, Euan scuffed our sixth in.
At this point, Woburn had a rush of blood and broke through suddenly from midfield. Their forward put a superb long-range shot into the back of our net and Tommy T stood no chance. Our riposte was a seventh, killer goal from the boy Alex.
So that’s it. Excellent performances all over the pitch and some nice football played to boot. Next week, the auld enemy – B R E N T H A M! Don’t miss it.
