This was a game that featured a cameo appearance from Wristy Morgan; an (almost) virtuoso performance from our new Mr Versatility – aka Gav; and on the touchline, we even had the legendary Two Eggs Power and a celebrity Smurf to cheer us on (nice hat, Arif!).
Even the injured Stevie B showed up briefly before kickoff to say Happy Christmas to everyone – and to use the toilet. Yes, there was definitely a Christmas feel to the day.
It was a freezing cold Winter’s day and the pitch was hard, well hard – not as hard as Wayne, obviously – and the ball bobbled about like billy-oh. But for some reason, Woburn seemed to find it more bobbly than we did.
While they struggled to get the ball under control, our passing was – for the most part – inch perfect despite the fact that we were playing into a blinding winter sun for the first half.
It was Gavin who opened the scoring a few minutes in after a quick short corner on the left. He drove a belter in from distance at a very tight angle. The keeper had no chance. One-nil. Not long after, a defender nicked the ball from Robin and ended up putting it in his own net. Two-nil.
The scoreline stayed the same until half-time but the possession was all us. With a couple of modest exceptions, they never really threatened our goal and the defence of Wayne, Tel and Yours Truly broke up their few forward forays.
In midfield, we were playing really nice passing football. Robin, Euan, Jake, the Two Toms and GB were involved in tight little triangles and one-twos and it was frustrating the hell out of Woburn. But despite several chances, and a couple of fine saves from their keeper, we couldn’t find a third goal.
As the second half kicked off, Wayne came off to ref to let Jake on. Gavin moved from his central midfield role to central defence to replace Wayne. Whether it was the change in our lineup that unsettled us, I don’t know, but Woburn suddenly seemed a little sharper and our defending a little less organised.
While we scored another two – from Euan and Jake – they were squeezing us more at the back and winning corners. Dave G was a commanding presence in the area but about 15 minutes in, a stonking shot left him flailing at empty air. But wait! Who is that leaping to his rescue like a young salmon?
Is it a bird, a plane? No, it’s SuperGav! Not content with having played in midfield and defence he now wanted to have a go at goalkeeping. He did quite well to stop the shot – but doing it with his fist was probably not a good idea.
If it was a question in You the Ref, you’d have had to send him off. But we had Wayne reffing and, while he gave the penalty, there was no way he was going to wave a red card. To be fair, even Woburn didn’t pursue this – although they might have done if they hadn’t potted the penalty, haha!
GB came off around this point to let Wristy Morgan on for his cameo role on the left, where the the boy did very well. Robin put another goal away at the other end fairly soon after (I think I have the sequence right).
They got a second, a real belter from distance when their No 14, who I’d marked out of existence in the first half, finally got away from me.
Tom Taw tapped in the sixth not long after this – from a square ball from Robin I think – to settle things.
So a satisfying result. Disappointing we didn’t keep a clean sheet. But the boyz done good. Happy Christmas.
The lineup: Dave G, Tel, Wayne, Den, Chris N, GB, Gav, Tom B, Tom T, Euan, Robin. Jake reffed first half, Wayne second. GB swapped for Wristy 15 mins into second half.
