2005-6 Season

Kenchels FC 4 NPL 1

By Kevin Gallan
It was all about the Greengrass on a day when the Chels’ extended their 100 per cent record to two games. The day began with no Greengrass either on the pitch or in the dressing room leaving a ten-man Chels to face NPL in a mud bath.

The game started brightly with the Chels’ taking the game to NPL and getting stuck in all around the park. Plenty of chances with Kev hitting the crossbar and Jake and Alex going close (don’t remember specifics but you can always bet they had some chances).

Chels took the lead when Ian, the dynamo of the midfield, swapped passed with Newbod, side stepped their raging bull in the right wing position and sent in a low cross.

Alex apparently dummied (or was it an airshot???) leaving Jake with a typical poacher’s goal from two yards out. One-nil.

Chels continued to dominate and Jake played Kev in for the second midway through the half. Two-nil.

Wayne then decided that the easiest way around their tallest player was over him and the ref gave a penalty. Up steps Tom T, Boston hero, just before half-time and reliving that great day, he once again made the save as well as the follow-up save.

To make it all the more satisfying it was their gobbiest player who missed the pen. Two-nil to the ‘Chels at half-time.

Newbod gave the managerial team-talk. It said something to the effect of nothing. Don’t change, keep playing the way we are (well, no change there then. Ed).

NPL came back into a bit more in the early stages of the second half before ‘Chels brilliance kicked in. Tweaky knocked a nice ball down the line for Jake who produced an impressive turn to lose his marker and then slot in the perfect pass for Alex to clip it over the keeper. Three-nil.

Chances then popped up at both ends with Tom T almost losing his tooth making another great save. Sadly NPL did manage a consolation from a corner that never was. It was an unfortunate goal rather than bad defending. Three-one. ‘Chels then topped it off with Jake again scoring from about two yards. Four-one.

So, in the end, a lot of heroes on the day. Jake with two goals and two assists (whose counting except him???), Tom T a rock in goal and Ian a general in midfield. The back three didn’t give anything away all morning and Tom B and Newbod in particular ran, tackled and battled throughout.

Bring on Imperial!
