It was a great day for the Irish, a bad day for the Japanese and an absolutely fan-dabby-dozee day to be a Kenchel.
We finally came back to life with a sensational performance. After two months without a win, victory tasted sweet – and sweeter still for Gavin, who’s dad was over from the Auld Country and on the touchline to see him take two cracking goals.
To say we were tense going into this game was an understatement. After last week’s annihalation at the hands of Teddington Vets, the Japanese were a daunting prospect. Young, fit and fast they might have given us a real run-around.
But it was not to be. ‘Chels were on their backs from the kickoff and never eased up. We dominated possession from kickoff and in the first half GB, Jake and Luis in particular were causing havoc in the Jap defence. Luis in fact had an outstanding half – playing deft flicks and one-twos around the box (Of course, he owes it all to John Murphy’s Magic Boots, which he had borrowed for the game).
Clear-cut chances on goal were hard to come by though and they threatened once or twice on the break. As the half went on, their was always the danger of them nicking something against the run of play. But, unlike last week, the defence – Tommy T, Wayne and Stevie B – was solid as rock.
Nil-nil at half-time, Deputy Director of Football Newman made some deft changes bringing me on at right-back, Terry up front – yes, up front – and playing Tommmy T in the Ukelele role. We didn’t put a foot wrong.
Everywhere on the pitch, ‘Chels were pulling together, working hard and playing stylish, passing football. We had several corners and were pumping crosses in but just couldn’t get on the end of them. Terry was in the thick of it in his new role and the Japs were winning nothing.
About halfway in, Gavin picks up the ball on the edge of the box and launches a blaster that sails past the keeper. One-nil. Would our old friend the Kenchels Glass Jaw now make a reappearance? Not a chance.
A few minutes later Tom B threads a masterful pass through to Jake, who slots home from close range after nanosecond of hesitation between the keeper and his defender.
The Japs responded with a brief period of pressure and might have nicked one back but it hit the post. Gavin sealed the result with another rocket about ten minutes from the end.
At this point, step forward Gav’s Dad Ronnie for a brief cameo role as a Kenchel during which he acquitted himself admirably down the right flank. He acquitted himself even more admirably in the bar afterwards after receiving his signed matchball and buying everyone a well-deserved victory beer. Superb.
The Lineup: Craig, Stevie B, Wayne, Tommy T, New-bi-wan, GB, Euan, Gavin, Tom B, Luis, Jake. Subs: Den and Terry for Luis and Chris.
