2005-6 Season

British Airways 7 Kenchels FC 2

It was a beautiful autumn day, blue skies, golden sunshine and a newly-laid pitch to play on. As a bonus for admirers of the beautiful game, there wasn’t even a Stevie B in the starting lineup. Yes, this clash certainly had a dreamlike quality about it – especially in the right-back position, haha!

Everything was set fair for a glorious game against our old enemy, British Airways. Little did we know that it would end in a crushing defeat, unequalled since…er…our last one.

As Stevie fumed from the touchline – he’d arrived late and had to sit out the first half – he must have had mixed emotions. On the one hand, he wanted to play. On the other hand, he wanted to play.

Back to the game. We got a real hiding here, made all the more bitter by a cruel twist of fate that put us two up within 15 minutes of kickoff.

Euan had put a shot in, Alex headed the rebound and Jake got the rebound off the rebound. Moments later, Alex did his dying swan thing in the area after a defender took him out, and put away the resulting penalty.

Astonishing indeed. But it was downhill from here on. BA, quite a few of whom had also played the previous day, were not giving up and came back at us with a vengeance.

Craig – who incidentally showed up in good time having made his plans accordingly unlike some others – made a couple of excellent saves but our defending was weak and they ripped up our flanks with abandon.

They got four back fairly rapidly – two coming at us straight down the middle and two crosses from distance left Craig flailing as they went over his head. Neither goal was intended – the guy who scored the second of the lobs shouted ‘Oh, shit’ as it went in. Four-two. Incredible. And they could have had three or four more, if they’d got someone on the end of the balls they were pinging across the face of our goal.

At half-time, the smart money decided it was time to duck out and keep their player stats figure in the black. EP – fresh back from KL – took himself off, along with moi and Newbione. Terry came on at right back and Stevie B took a role in central midfield. It didn’t make much difference to the game, but it did knock their match stats down a bit.

We weren’t out of the game but we weren’t taking our chances either. John Murphy had an outstanding, battling game in midfield and was undoubtedly our man of the match. Stevie B put one superb corner across the goal that Jake almost connected with and Gavin slammed a drive off their bar.

At the other end, Wayne made some world class tackles. Stevie B brought a bit of steel to midfield and Euan ran them ragged on the left and Craig kept us afloat several times. But it was all to no avail.

I won’t bore you with the details – well, mostly ‘cos I have forgotten them – but they put another three away. To make matters worse, for the last 15 minutes or so they were playing with ten men.
