2005-6 Season

Spelthorne 0 Kenchels FC 7

The Mighty Blues went home with their first clean sheet of the season after this game. As Stevie B observed in the bar later, it curiously coincided with the absence of a Kenchels ref.

An extraordinary goal-crazed first half, in which we went six-nil up , was followed by a ping-pong second in which we scored only one goal. Bringing The Greatest Chel of All Time on for the second half may have had something to do with it.

Anyway, let’s not carp. ‘Chels played drop-dead-gorgeous football in the first half against a team which was a lot better than the final score suggests. They had a few decent players but weren’t well organised and were very slow at the back.

Our first goal came maybe ten minutes in, when Alex potted a penalty after a struggling defender put the boot in inside the box.

Chances followed a-plenty. We played some really neat, crisp football. Alex ended up with four goals eventually. John Murphy – who played a great game – put two away, and Euan got one more. Even I put a shot in – which whizzled past the right post, sadly.

Our Craig didn’t have too much to do, frankly. They didn’t get a single corner in the first half and managed to win only two corners for the entire second half.

Our own performance in the second half was mixed. There was the sublime brilliance of Greengrazza on the left flank, tweaking and twiddling their forwards around his masterful left foot before loosing the perfect ball down the flank.

On the other hand there were so many wasted opportunities in front of goal. At least fifty by most counts. Arif, no doubt, will discuss one superbly executed slice in front of their open goal at length, with anyone who cares to listen. But he was not the only one.

We had one anxious moment after a sluggish defender managed to handle the ball on the edge of our box (it was never a penalty, honest). But the shot on goal was well wide.

So that’s about it. Sensational first half, in which we took almost every chance we got, and a desperately profligate second. Very quiet -and very productive – Stevie B (for the most part) throughout.

The lineup: Craig, Stevie B, Wayne, Tom Taw, Den, Tom B, Kevin G, Newbods, Euan, John Murphy & Alex. Subs: Greengrazza and Arif for Newbods and Kev.
