By Stevie ‘Superhero’ B
Inspired by the ‘feel good’ atmosphere of the previous Friday’s “2005 Bash”, and the lavish awards bestowed on the good and great before the assembled glitterazzi, the Chels set about their task in buoyant mood.
With just Mrs Murphy crying off on the day, still a little hung over from the Friday evening and unsure of his standing with Tom Taw after his impromptu acceptance speech for the Armani Award, an otherwise full squad of 16 players always looked a strong hand for the day’s battle.
With 2004 Golden Boot, Gavin, and Robin playing Lampard and Gudjohnsen to the excellent Tom Taw’s Makelele, the midfield supremacy was never in question. Chances were created from the first minute and the opening goal was not long in coming. A long throw from Young Player of the Season, King’s Head Dave, was glanced on by EP and, bouncing through a throng of defenders, confounded the hapless keeper as it looped over his head into the goal. One-nil.
A lightning break minutes later saw Tom Bradbury released on the right and his pinpoint cross to the far post, taking out the keeper on the way, was met by EP for his second headed goal.
Within another few minutes, a little midfield confusion of ricocheted balls resulted in Alex, recently crowned for Worst Tackle 2005, being set free to run one-on-one with the keeper and he duly slotted the ball home confidently for a 3-0 scoreline.
On 30 minutes, more midfield endeavour and a neat interchange between Gavin and EP saw the ball sit up for ‘our Kev’ and he lashed a 35-yard volley at goal, which dipped and swerved past the ever more hapless keeper. Thirty minutes and 4-0 up.
Time to start the rolling subs, with Gavin and Robin being replaced by the self-styled Greatest Chel Ever, Arif “Keeper of the Cushion” Khan and Riga Goal of the Tour winner, Euan, Arif entering the fray for the first time since May 2002 in Medugorje. Shortly after that King’s Head Dave collided in mid-air and had to come off with knee ligament trouble, making way for the evergreen Greengrass. Before half-time Tom Bradbury was replaced by the beaming Player of the Season, dotCheshireCatDen, leaving just referee Newbod short of a run-out.
Before half-time we also conceded the goal that prevented our clean sheet, a clean sheet that the goalkeeping excellence of Mike Power surely deserved. But MKP, recently awarded the Prague Man of the Tour award, had no chance as the attacker nipped in front of his defender to head the ball in at the near post from a corner.
Half-time and the only change was Newbod on for Mr Bellamy (Player of the Season 2003), who refereed in able fashion in the second half. The opposition continued their period of dominance and the Chels weathered several attacks, all resulting in their slick dribblers blasting over the bar or their shots being saved by Man of the Match Mike Power. One such save late in the game rivalled Gordon Banks’ spectacularly famous save against Pele in the 1970 World Cup.
But two quick breaks steadied the nerves and sealed the game: firstly Gavin released Jake down the left and lovely weighted ball was slotted home by Alex. And then in the last ten minutes another break saw Arif feed Jake with a lovely first time ball along the deck for Jake to place past the keeper (goal number 534 for our recent recipient of the award recognising his 500th Goal).
Wayne, a second-time recipient of the Donkey of the Year award, was also injured in the last ten minutes and Stevie B returned to the fray to steady the ship. Stevie B, our Super-Hero for the second time, stood firm behind Den’s slices and Paul’s deflections to give some confidence to an erstwhile uncomfortably busy MK Power.
Six-one then and a good performance. Tom Taw, the Boston Man of the Tour, should have been Man of the Match for his excellent ‘Makelele’ display, but was pipped at the post by the goalkeeping performance of Mike Power.
Starting XI: Mike, Terry, Wayne, Dave C, Tom T, Tom B, Robin, Gav, Steve, Alex, Jake
Subs: Arif, Euan, Paul, Den, Chris N
Score: 6(4) – 1(1)
Scorers: EP(2), Alex(2), Gavin, Jake
