2004-5 Season

Kenchels FC 2 Brentham 3

By the combined pen of EP & Stevie B.Elzibub

What a way to finish the domestic season! On a glorious spring day, it should have been third time lucky for us against Brentham but they remain our bogey side.

It was level pegging until 30 minutes in when they waltzed through on the left flank from the halfway line. Their forward just beat Wayne’s attempt to snuff him out and managed to poke it past David into the far corner.

We equalized thanks to Jake chasing down a loose ball which their defender lost in the sun. The goalie missed it too and EP poked it in at the far post.

They scored again five minutes before half-time. Tom Taw had broken their attack down twice, but they picked the ball up again and threaded it through for a Brenthamite to get a toe too.

We started the second half well and were playing further and further up the pitch. We equalised when Stevie B put in a sooperb corner "Bank-style" to the far post where EP could scarcely fail to head it in for the equaliser.

Their Number 9 tweaked his knee shortly after and had to go off. At this point, we were all over them and looked like we could have had another two or three. For maybe 15 or 20 minutes, we were ping-ponging the ball all over their goalmouth but the ball just would not go in.

Their injured bod came back on and the tables turned again. In the last five minutes they scored a controversial goal that looked decidedly offside. We didn’t get the benefit of the doubt at the other end either for a might-have-been-a-penalty handball by them.

So, the records show a 3-2 defeat, but we can take (some) solace in the fact that we played the better football, had much better chances and should have won, never mind drawn. Brentham had five attacks on goal and scored three times.

Stevie "muted-on-the-day" B was Man of the Match.
