A very satisfying victory this, with ‘Chels playing stylish passing football, keeping a clean sheet – an excellent performance from Craig by the way – and John Murphy finishing nicely to seal it for us halfway through the second half.
We had some bumpy moments at the back in the first quarter – with Holyport pinging in shots and crosses to challenge Craig. Stevie B had one brief moment where he exceeded 90 decibels but his club-sponsored therapy sessions seem to be working.
We settled reasonably quickly and began to look dangerous going forward. Alex was doing his usual to the left back and crosses were flying in. Their keeper looked increasingly nervous.
Apart from a short period of Holyport pressure early on, the second half was dominated by ‘Chels. We looked increasingly reliable defensively (Dave ‘Kings Head’ had a great game at left back). True they hit the bar a couple of times but we had loads more chances.
The goal came from an Alex ‘defender-bender’ run in from the corner flag and a cut-back to John Murph – who had replaced Jake after a knee injury in the first half. John put it away like the true professional (hair-dresser) that he is.
The ‘league’ ref is probably worth a mention – astonishing everyone by insisting on checking studs and taping up jewellery. Good job he couldn’t see my piercing.
Lineup: Craig, Den, Wayne, ‘Kings Head’ Dave, GB, Stevie B, Chris N, Robin, Tom B
Alex and Jake (John Murphy for Jake after injury first half}. Subs: Tom T for Chris N, Euan for Robin, Greengrazza for GB.
