2004-5 Season

NPL 2 Kenchels FC 1

Every team has their demons. Man U have Roy Keane, Arsenal have Viera. We have Steve B L Zebub and Wayne ‘Wicked Witch of the North’ aka The Caretaker, who produced enough hot air in this encounter to run my moped for a couple of months.

As our luck and our patience started running out in the second half, BL and WWOTN started to weave their magic – on the ref, the opposition and even the poor old right back who knew he was having a mare and didn’t need have it bellowed across the pitch at 90 decibels thank you very much so there!

There was a bit of handbags halfway through the second half from both our little devils and if the ref had not been deaf he might have taken a different view of what WWOTN was saying about him in particular. Both could easily have got sent off.

OK so we were two-nil down at half-time and had only ourselves to blame. The unfortunate Tom B played a part in both goals – throwing the ball to them for the first and gifting a corner for the second (although GB owned up that, as the guy on the line for the corner, he let the header squirm past his ample midriff).

Ironically, it had been us who looked more likely to score. We had half a dozen good chances with shots crashing the underside of the bar, balls fired across goal and just missing the far post and so on.

As the second half began, we were in their half 80 per cent of the time.

Alex, Euan, Robin, Jake and GB all had at least another half dozen good chances and, halfway through the half, Alex put one on target. It felt like it would only be time before we scored more, but NPL worked hard, got men behind the ball and we continued to be unlucky.

We hit the bar again. Several shots went just wide. Headers went just over. Eventually we simply ran out of time.

Oh how the rest of us wished that BL and WWOTN had run out of breath instead.

The lineup: Tom T(<½),Den, Wayne, John
Chris N, Tom B, Euan, Steve, Graham, Alex, Robin.
Second half: David on for Tom T, who moved to left-back, John moved to right-midfield and Tom B came off; Chris N came off, Jake came on, and Robin slipped into the hole behind the front two.
