2004-5 Season

Lensbury 4 Kenchels 3

Frankly, I am ashamed to write this match report having been run ragged by Lensbury’s forwards for most of the 90 minutes. Even when they took one of them off and brought on their resident fat bloke, he was quicker than me.

I didn’t know whether to stay tight on them or stand off. If I got too close, they’d lay off a one-two to get around me. If I stood off, they’d get the cross in or try a shot.

And that is exactly how they went ahead about 20 minutes into the game. It was a cracking strike from just outside our box.

Fortunately, we pulled one back shortly afterwards when Jake got around the back of them thanks to a glorious through ball from EP (that’s how he described it) and put a terrific shot in from an incredibly tight angle.

Jose – the new member of Kenchels Spanish contingent – put a second blaster past them shortly afterwards, to give us the edge.

It didn’t last long. their second, just before half-time, came from a break where we were left 2-on-2 and they walked it into the goal.

Their third came early in the second half, courtesy of Mr Newman’s acrobatics. His gyrations whilst lying on his arse on the edge of the penalty area, trying to connect in vain with the ball he’d just tripped over, could yet appear as an aerobics video to compete with Jane Fonda’s best.

We were still in the game though and Jose and Tom Bradbury in particular had excellent games – Tom B winning the ball all over the place and Jose powering his way through them. We had more than a few chances, most notably a tremendous corner from GB that hit the bar. Wayne also had a terrific chance – but he put it into Row Z.

Their fourth was a headed goal from a decent cross after we failed to clear a corner, I think. Our riposte was a neat headed flick from Jake’s headed corner halfway through the second half.

Other items of note, this was GB’s 100th game and as honorary captain he shook hands very nicely and gave the dimples a little outing for the ref’s benefit. And then in the match, of course, he played like a little demon – cutting and thrusting up the left and jinking into the middle until he was brought to his knees. Full marks for effort.

We might also mention the demise of Chris "undefeated" Allen’s record. Called in to the side as seventh choice left back (after Tweaky B, King’s Head Dave, Tel, Greengrazza, Tommy Taw and Mad Dog Rog), Chris’s talismanic quality was compromised as he limped off in defeat halfway through the second half with a pulled hammy.

That’s it. I have come over all maudlin just thinking about it. Next week the Japanese and the Hammer of Nippon…

The lineup: Tom Taw, Den, Wayne, Chris Allen, Tom Bradbury, Gavin, Robin, Jose, GB, John Murphy, Jake. Subs: Newbods, Luis
