2004-5 Season

Kenchels FC 1 Imperial College 1

This was a helluva tight game. Tighter even than Stevie B’s trousers or our notorious Centrefile strip. Even-stevens the first half, we dominated the third quarter and they were on top for the last quarter.

Nil-nil at half-time, our goal came about 15 minutes into the second when Alex was lightly tripped by an Imperial defender (sounds like a make of car, doesn’t it?). Alex’s subsequent dying swan routine fooled everyone, including the ref, and Robin put the penalty away nicely.

Five minutes later their equaliser came from a Newbod Triple Axle Spiral (no skates) that Arif would have been proud of, that let them through on goal.

There were a few casualties along the way. Steve was replaced by Tom T after 25 minutes and goalkeeper Mike had to hobble off an hour in after taking an almighty smack in the upper body. So, of course, now Tom T had to step in for Mike (that’s versatility for you!)

Tom’s slot was filled by Ian from IC, with Tel moving to right-back and myself moving to right midfield (where I continued to excel).

We’d had a couple of close calls and the game could really have gone either way. Mike Power made a fantastic stop in the first half and our borrowed IC player Ian cleared one off the line in the second half.

We also had some nice chances ourselves – noticeably one terrific free kick from Euan. Tom Bradbury had a great game and would probably get my MoM award.

Stevie B disappeared after the final whistle (as had several of our wallets, cheque books, loose change etc). Where exactly did he go with his dad at halftime?

PS: Top marks to Mr Newbods for getting the fixture set up after London Hospitals let us down, btw!
