2004-5 Season

Kenchels FC 3 Shepperton Green 1

A stonking hat-trick from ‘Mrs’ Murphy brought a well-earned victory for the Chels in what had been a tighter game than the scoreline might suggest.

It was also notable for the emergence of a new refereeing talent, Stevie ‘Pierluigi’ Bartholomew, whose astonishing blend of decisiveness and casual knitwear kept the lid on the tetchiness that could have dragged the game down.

The first goal came about ten minutes in when Jake pulled off a terrific tackle in the centre circle and put the ball through to Mrs M, who went straight for goal and stylishly put a scorching drive past the keeper.

Sadly most of the ‘Chels didn’t appear to have gotten out of bed yet and the goal had flattered us. We were giving the ball away sloppily – getting caught in possession, or playing long, risky balls that were easily intercepted.

They came back in the game and forced a couple of corners. And it was the second one of these that exposed us defensively and gave them the equaliser (Mr Greengrazza, where were you when we needed you!).

The game got a bit niggly now and there was a bit of a carry on in their box for one of our corners involving Mr Newbods and Goatee Bloke (their principal villain). It was ably quashed by Pierluigi however.

As the second half began, we switched to man-to-man marking at the back and this immediately made a difference (The Caretaker’s idea, of course). We seemed stronger in midfield – and more awake – and it paid off with an early second goal, when a throw-in from Euan came to Mrs M, who turned on a sixpence and put it away.

They had a couple of breaks in response, one of which forced a fantastic stop from Craig, but they didn’t really recover.

Our third came from a Jake run, which ended with him laying a square ball off for Mrs M to tap in ten minutes from time.

The lineup: Craig, TelBel, Caretaker, Dot, GB, Tom B, Newbods, Euan, Tom T, Mrs M, Jake. No subs. Official attendence: 4 and a dog. The referee wore a nice blue casual sweater, with matching denim pantaloons and brilliant white tennis shoes. Mmmm!
