2004-5 Season

Kenchels FC 2 Purford 2

A late goal from EP got us the draw but it was a game we should have won. With the exception of a brief spell in the second half, we had dominated midfield and had many more scoring opportunities than Purford.

Our passing was crisp and tight and the movement in midfield was excellent, despite having the wind against us. We forced several corners and Purford rarely made it into our half. Their defence was bolstered by the presence of one John Murphy, back from injury and standing in for one of theirs. We finished the half nil-nil.

The crisp passing continued in the second. About 30 minutes in, Alex found himself through on goal and put a superbly placed shot past the keeper.

Exactly one minute later, our failure to close down a Purford midfielder outside our box resulted in a magnificent strike that Tom T had no chance of stopping (although Wayne did get a touch with his bonce). It was their first serious attempt on goal and they had scored!

Their heads were up now and for a brief period it seemed like a different game. Purford’s midfield was pressing us and, from the back, we seemed to be playing deeper and deeper. Now it was their turn to win corner after corner.

Despite this, the defence held up well. Wayne pulled off several vital tackles and Greengrazza on the left blocked more than a couple of crosses.

Sadly, it was not enough. A goalmouth scramble 20 minutes in ended with their No 11 backheeling the ball past Tom T. Stevie B was not amused – the words ‘jammy c***’ were uttered.

We galvanised ourselves again and pressed forward looking for the equaliser. With four minutes to go, Stevie’s hamstring twanged. EP brought himself on as a replacement and shortly afterwards got on the end of an inswinging GB corner, managing somehow to bobble the ball over the line to equalise two minutes before time.

So there it was. Another inspired substitution from EP kept the ‘Chels in it.

The only other notable aspect was that Wayne picked up a new nickname. Before the game, he had been asked by one of the kids in the changing rooms if he was the caretaker. His response – ‘No, I’m playing’ – was greeted with great hilarity.

Anyway, he shall forever be The Caretaker from now on.

The lineup: Tom Taw, Greengrazza, The Caretaker, Dotdense, GB, Stevie B, Ian Dunn, EP, Tom B, Alex & Jake. Second half subs: Andy (reffed first half) for Robin (reffed second), Robin for Stevie B (injured)30 mins in. John Murphy played for the oppo.
