INSPIRED substitutions at half-time turned what had been a dreary game into a stunning ‘Chels victory. The flair, pace and sensational ball skills of Paul Greengrazza and Dotden on the flanks so stunned Popes Grove that they never recovered and ended up losing 5-1.
Right, that’s the fantasy intro out of the way. Now for the real match report, courtesy of Gav’s illegible notes scrawled in the bar after the game. You can also check out some match pictures.
It was a tight first half and there was nothing to suggest Popes would fall in such a big way. We were moving the ball around nicely though and had more of the possession.
We went ahead when Robin pounced on an Alex cross but they promptly equalised. Or as Gav’s note reads: "Dancing Queen strikes again, 1-1." Does anyone know what that might mean, Wayne?
The rest of the half played out quietly apart from when Stevie B’s larynx went into spasm shouting for a new ball when the other one went over the wall. Then he moaned because the ball was too soft. For some reason this was directed at me, don’t ask me why.
As the second half began, the Boss brought me on at right-back and Paul at left, with Craig dropping into the Wayne slot (he’d been called on to ref).
I now refer again to Gav’s scribble. ‘Gavin beat at least six of their players and set up Stevie B for a long-range shot which, of course, he fluffed but it still went in’.
We were rocking now. The passing was tight and the defending was too, with barely a slip at the back. Popes were struggling to keep possession and their heads went down.
Our third came from another fine Alex corner, which Gavin got a head to and knocked off the keeper and the bar only for Robin to poke in the rebound. ARound this point, Craig felt a twinge somewhere or other, so Wayne came back on for him.
Despite this, we kept a clean sheet. Then Euan managed to get the fourth, lobbing the keeper from 25 yards out. The fifth came when Gav drew three players out to release GB, who finishes from 20 yards.
The great might-have-been was a sensational Greengrazza strike from well outside the box that smacked into the crossbar. Of course, it might have had a slightly different trajectory had we pumped it up properly.
I am buying the pumps, boys. Trust me.
