Terry had problems with his car’s satnav on the way to the game. It was an omen. Even a geostationary satellite in low-earth orbit could not have helped us keep our shape with Meadhurst – a team we have never beaten – pulling us every which way in the second half.
We had started brilliantly with an early goal from Jake – it was a great finish too. But moments later they pulled one back. Nevertheless, we were playing well, with Gavin, Jake, GB and Larry threading the ball around nicely.
Half-way through the first, Jake nicked another – sadly, so did they bang on half-time. It was 2-2 but we were still in with a strong chance and had played well. We were still more than it.
At this point, Newbi-wan had to make changes. Kings Head Dave had to duck out so there was a bit of shuffling which brought me in at right-back and put Euan into midfield. He decided not to bring himself on which, given the final score, suggests he was trying to move himself up the MVP stats.
We continued to press forward strongly but we weren’t dropping back sufficiently fast when they won the ball. At times overelaborate in front of goal, we muffed quite a few chances.
Meadhurst were pinging long balls back up the park when we lost it. The inevitable happened and they scored. Not once, but three times in fairly rapid succession.
We were struggling and some heads went down for a bit. There were a few comedy classics in the defence – my inadvertent backpass to Tom T and the resulting free kick in the box was one of them.
Jake managed to complete a superb hat-trick with a consolation goal just before the final whistle but it had been a sorry second half for the ‘Chels. We were frail defensively and didn’t convert the many chances we’d had. Bummer.
The lineup: Tom Taw, Terry B, Wayne, Kings Head Dave, Larry LD, GB, Tom B, Gavin, Dot, Alex, Jake. Subs: Euan – when KH Dave went at half-time. On the touchline: Newbi-wan.
