As the boss said in the pub later, it’s not often you can call the ref a blind, deaf nincompoop (that’s not quite the word he used) and be entirely accurate. But in the case of this game, it was sadly true.
Within ten minutes the audio-visually-challenged official gave a very dubious penalty for handball against Stevie B, which Imperial put past Craig a moment later. We didn’t deserve to be behind and now we faced an uphill struggle in what turned out to be a very tight game.
With Gavin back in midfield, we were linking up better than in recent weeks and we had as many chances as Imperial did. The closest was a Robin header from a corner which the goalie somehow managed to block.
But Imperial were also menacing coming forward. A Wayne body-check on one of their forwards sparked a little bit of handbags – and Craig took a late challenge a few minutes later which got Gavin a little worked up.
Five minutes before half-time, when I failed miserably to move for a pass from Robin on the edge of our box, they pounced. Craig had no chance. Two-nil.
We came off very down in the mouth. But the good news was that the referee hadn’t finished yet. No sooner had we restarted than he awarded us a dodgey penalty – which Jake put away nicely. Suddenly we were back in the game.
We slowly started to dominate the midfield – forcing them to pump shots in from distance. We created quite a few chances with some good corners and free kicks. Finally with about a minute to go, Robin put one in with his bonce to equalise.
Noteworthy mentions go to Craig – who made some courageous dives at the feet of their forwards; GB, back after his knee troubles and Euan, who strengthened our midfield in the second half.
The lineup: Craig, Den, Wayne, ‘Kings Head’ Dave, Newbods, Stevie B, Gavin, Robin, Tom B, Tom T, Jake, Alex. Subs: GB for Stevie B, Euan for Tom T (I think!)
