2004-5 Season

Kenchels 2 Brentham Club 3

Once again, we paid the price for not sorting our social calendars out before this important fixture. With EP in Auld Oireland and a host of other stalwarts out – including Gavvo, Tom Bradbury and Wayne – we fielded a largely scratch side against opposition who invariably give us a tough time.

In the bare 12 that trooped out were two of my postie colleagues, Ian Dunn and Graeme Copper, and Luis the Dweeber, who brought his new missus along with him. If she had brought a pair of boots, she would probably have got a game (and would have looked good in the kit, too).

EP’s parting instructions had been simple: ‘Make sure you do’em!’ Sadly, it was us what got done. We gave them a good run for their money though.

Jake scored after about five minutes. Two minutes later they got one back, direct from a corner. And that is how it stayed until half-time, with Brentham dominating possession and penning us into our own half.

They got a second after shortly after the break when we gave the ball away in midfield for the umpteenth time and allowed them to break through. A third came from a stonking shot which hit the bar and was headed home on the rebound.

It had been a scrappy game but we finally got it together after their third goal and began passing the ball around instead of hoofing it. This created several chances that culminated in an Alex goal about 15 minutes from time.

We fought hard to equalise and now it was Brentham’s turn to look worried. Larry Let-Down shot one across the face of goal and Terry B put one over the bar from about three feet out (the goal would have been disallowed, said the ref later in the bar,’cos someone was offside).

With about five minutes to go, the red mist came down on their left back – who’d had enough of seeing Alex’s arse go flying past him – and he took the boy out in true ice hockey style. The ref had no choice but to send him off.

Our man of the match was undoubtedly Craig, who stood in for Wayne in central defence, and proved he hasn’t forgotten how to tackle. Dave Goodheart also kept us in it with several crucial saves. Other notable performances were from Ian and Luis in midfield, and Alex – in particular in the second half.

That lineup in full: Dave G, Den, Craig, Tel, Ian Dunn, Graeme Copper, Newbods, Larry LD, Tom T, Jake and Alex. Subs: Luis for Tom Taw (off with an Achilles problem). On the bench: A Very Cold Mrs Luis.
