2004-5 Season

Shepperton Green 1 Kenchels FC 8

Truly this was the stuff of legends. And apparently not a game to miss – which was unfortunate for Dotden, cos he did miss it thanks to a rather chesty cough. Thus it is I, El Presidente, who takes up the pen for posterity.

It didn’t come easy. We didn’t take Shepperton apart until the second half, when we created numerous chances and bagged a good proportion of them.

The first half was more hard-fought and it was probably about halfway through before we got our first goal. The second came about 10 minutes after that.

We kicked off the second half and scored without them touching the ball!

A patient build-up down the right, involving half a dozen players and twice as many passes, culminated in Alex teeing up Gavin for a drive from just inside the penalty area.

They kicked off, instantly lost the ball and we scored again! Four-nil. We were on a high and they were sunk. The other highlight was their goal, of course.

Pressed on the halfway line – but playing good, passing football – Gavin (I think) played the ball back to Tom Taw in the right back position. Craig was in space and a simple backpass would suffice.

Tom, in a tribute to the legendary Steve Falcone waited until he could see the whites of the eyes of the onrushing attacker before slipping the ball back to Craig.

Now, it should be noted that the only clean sheet of the season belongs to Tom. Coincidence maybe, but he did put Craig in more trouble than he needed to.

Having said that, Craig had plenty of time to welly the ball back up the field (or anywhere really). However, inspired by Tom, Craig waited until the, by now plural, attackers were virtually standing on his boot laces before deciding what to do and, having been sacked like an exposed quarterback, settled for watching one of his assailants stroke the ball into the net.

Either Craig is very altruistic and wanted to keep Tom as ‘Clean Sheet Man’ or Tom had threatened to leave his false teeth in a hideous place in Craig’s proximity as some future point. Either that was another clean sheet that went west.

The lineup: Craig, Terry, Wayne, Dave C, Chris, Tom T, Robin, Gavin, Steve, Alex, Jake. Subs: Tom B for Terry (Tom B at right mid, Tom T back to right back)
Score: 8-1 (half-time 2-0)
Scorers: Robin(3), og, Gavin, Jake(3)
