2004-5 Season

Kenchels FC 2 Japanese XI 6

The Mighty ‘Chels took a hammering in every sense from the Japanese in this first encounter of the season.

Of course, it’s not surprising. For a start, I was otherwise engaged on a murder weekend in deepest Dorset and that considerably weakened – not to say, lightened – the lineup. Secondly, the Japanese weren’t so much an XI as a XXII and were about the same age (XXII that is, not XI) and one of them was a West Ham youth team player!

We conceded early goals (5 mins and 15 mins) to a free kick from a backpass and a penalty that shouldn’t have been (an unusually clean Wayne tackle) and then a third just before the interval. That’s about the same half-time score as Pearl Harbour, boyz, by the way.

We pressed in the second half and were eventually awarded with a Gavin goal from Steve’s cross. However, we brilliantly conceded very quickly to make it 1-4. They then scored again before we got our second after an own goal from a Steve corner. They got their sixth when the Hammer of Nippon ran through the whole of our midfield and defence to rifle one home (I’m surprised he didn’t go back and nutmeg Robin and Jake to complete the set).

The lineup:
David,
Terry, Wayne, Steve
Chris,
John, Gavin, Tom B, Tom T
Robin,Jake

PS: I thought you might appreciate this cutting remark from EP on my non-appearance. ‘Den, you have now officially taken over the Mo mantle of managing to find reasons to be away for weekends when the BIG games are on (Murder Mystery Feckin Weekend indeed!)’

PPS: The butler did it.
