2004-5 Season

Kenchels FC 6 Imperial College 4

Four-nil up at half-time and it looked like we were cruising to victory. But, as EP wisely noted in his half-time chit-chat, it was still a tight game.

While we had buried every goal-scoring opportunity we’d had in the first half – they had not. But as a relatively young, fit side, they still had plenty to offer.

Their comeback began shortly into the second half when Wuss Newbod was alleged by a somewhat pedantic ref to have pushed someone inside the box. The scored from the free kick and so began our trials and tribulations.

They never managed to level the score but we did have some very nervous moments, with Dave G saving brilliantly at least three times, numerous punched clearances and many decisive calls in the box. They were also assisted by a guy with an incredible throw-in, which gave them the equivalent of a corner kick every time.

I won’t pretend to know the exact details of the scoring – Denzheimer’s is a terrible illness – but I can tell you that Alex scored a glorious hat-trick – including one beautiful curler from a corner – Gavin got two (the first, if I remember, being a stonking strike from distance) and Rob got the other.

The game was noteable for the return of Mo van der Omar, the crazy spinning Dutch guy, and Roger Moore at left back. It was also memorable for the appearance in the Royal Box of Arif Khan, self-styled Greatest Kenchel of All Time, whose post-match commentary was, as always, incisive and extremely piss-taking.

Finally, and on a sentimental note, there was a brief post-match ceremony to reunite Roger with his long, lost trousers believed lost on the 2004 ‘Chels tour to Prague. The look on his face when Steve B walked into the bar with the strides on was priceless.

Kenchels Trivia: Our goal difference figure is now so negative that it is on a par with the national debt of Malawi.
