2004-5 Season

Brentham Club 1 Kenchels FC 1

Mud, mud and more mud at BrenthamForget the fact this ended 1-1. Kenchels dominated throughout, a fact all the more remarkable given Brentham’s irritating tendency to beat us.

We had more possession, many more shots on goal and played with more determination. On top of that, some of our passing and movement was sublime. Even I, Mystic Den, could not have predicted such a great performance before kickoff, when a bare 11 ‘Chels lined up (where were you Mr Greengrass?) on a good but wet and heavy pitch.

From the off, we pushed forward. Midfield was stringing passes together nicely despite the heavy pitch, allowing Alex to get in behind them several times. Crosses were pinging in but we just couldn’t get them in the net.

In defence, Wayne, myself and Tom T gave little away to their little ‘Gazelle’ bloke or the lumbering giant ‘Clunk’ (Wayne’s nickname for him) – except that is for the muffed clearance that let them in to score their goal midway into the first half.

But we were even stronger after the goal. Craig looked solid and went down at their forwards’ feet repeatedly, taking at least one crunching from Clunk in the process.

At the other end, we won corner after corner, thanks mostly to Alex, but they defended well and repeatedly managed to clear. As we went into the second half, we were virtually camped in their half.

Shots were pinging in at them from every conceivable angle. It seemed almost as if our luck was out. Then, with about 15 mins to go, we won another corner and this time GB got his head to it and equalized.

A jubilant EP thought this one of our finest performances this season – and made sure he told the injured Stevie B, who had limped up to watch us from the touchline.

Lineup: Craig, Tom T, Wayne, Den, GB, Tom B, Robin, Gavin, John Murphy, Jake & Alex. No subs/changes.
