2004-5 Season

Bank of England 3 Kenchels FC 4

Another week, another victory – this time over the mighty Bank of England. I’d like to give you the thrills and spills, line by line but I can’t because I am suffering from Denzheimer Syndrome as usual.

However, I can give you a few key points. Firstly, we were without ‘Spooner’ and Terry – so we had a bit of a head start. It was a superb pitch, recently relaid and looking like the proverbial bowling green.

They started well but couldn’t find their star striker Gunner, cos I marked him out of the game from my new right back position (eat yer heart out, Bellamy, that shirt is mine!).

Our attacks were swift and precise, with the whole team passing exceptionally well. No surprise that by half-time, we were 2-0 up, thanks to a couple of crackers from Alex. Even so, Bank were still moving well off the ball and threatening from midfield.

In the second half, we gave away a silly goal after Wayne took a throw-in that should have been mine (arf, arf). They followed up with a deflection from a free kick just outside our box, which gave Craig no chance at all. From 2-0 to 2-2, what would Stevie B say!

Thankfully, Alex bounced back and scored another but almost immediately one of their guys broke through into the box. Wayne tackled him brilliantly – but the ref decided the tackle was less than brilliant and gave a very controversial penalty, from which they equalised.

We were rattled by the pen and the ref took a fair bit of stick – why, he was even suggesting that Wayne had threatened him with physical violence (which of course he probably had).

Anyway, we soon reasserted ourselves and Gavin got the winner a few minutes from time putting our Bank account well into credit. Another great performance and the best thing about it was that we were passing so well.

Next up is Den’s schoolchums, Old Salesians. Can the ‘Chels maintain their winning ways under Mr 100 Per Cent (ie Me) or will they curl up like a bloke in someone else’s duvet?

Starting lineup: Craig, Tom T, Wayne, Den, Paul G, GC, Robin, Alex, Jake, Jon Murphy
Subs: Tom B for Jon Murphy second half.
