2004-5 Season

London Hospital 2 Kenchels FC 3

Victory over London Hospitals was – pardon the pun – exactly what the doctor ordered given our disastrous showing against BA the week before.

The ‘Chels lineup included EP, back from bronco-busting in Atlanta, and Mike Power between the sticks. TelBel had been called up for international hair-dressing duty in Paris and Tom Taw came in to fill the right-back spot.

We started off playing nice passing football and – guess what – we carried on doing it. About 15 minutes in, Stevie B hobbled off with an exploding calf muscle and yours truly (this time minus a hangover) came in at right back with TT taking Steve’s left-hand slot.

London Hospitals moved the ball about nicely but they couldn’t cope with our pace and movement going forward. We were laying off some nice little one-twos and stroking the ball about like pros. Tom Bradbury once again was a workhorse in midfield, covering the length of the pitch time and time again.

No surprise then that by half-time we were, thanks to Gavo’s surgical strike, a goal up.

We came out for the second half and stretched them even further. Jake played some superb crossfield balls to Tom B and we had numerous chances on goal as Jake and Alex got in behind them.

Hospitals were still threatening coming forward – one bloke in particular seemed to be threatening everyone – but Gav stole another about 20 mins in. Around the same time, EP copped a deadleg and had to drop in with Chris Newbods in front of the back three.

Gav nicked another one to make it 2-0 but they came back quickly to score and for a brief period it looked like we were under the cosh. When Alex broke away and scored our third, it was all but over.

Hospitals came back and put us under intense pressure for about 15 minutes before the end with a string of corners. The inevitable happened and poor marking by Guess Who? left one of their lot free to tap a header in (the only black spot in what was probably my best game of the season to date). Still, I did manage to have a pop at goal with a delicately placed chip from well outside their box. Hit the bar!

Tel, I quite like playing right-back – when are you retiring?

Starting lineup: Mike Power, Stevie B, Wayne, Tom Taw, Newbods, John Murph, Robin, Gav and Tom B, with Jake and Alex up front.
Second half: Tom Taw at left back, Den at right back, Robin alongside Newbods
