It wasn’t only England stars being called up for international duty this week. EP had to dash off to the States on biz, leaving a depleted ‘Chels to face the wrath of British Airways.
Gavin had passed a late – and dubious – fitness check to join the starting lineup despite his shinsplints. Tom ‘Toe’ Taw was returning for his first game after his ordeal at the hands of the ingrowing toenail specialists. And myself, I’d been out on the tiles the night before and was suffering badly from an overdose of Stella Artois.
So things were not set fair. But we managed to give BA a hard time of it in the first half. We defended well and were managing to pass the ball around neatly in midfield. Alex weaved in behind them several times and we had some notable near misses. Craig was on top form too and pulled off several fine saves.
Tom Bradbury took an elbow to the head about halfway through the half and went down poleaxed. From the touchline, it looked like he’d done something serious but he’d only lost a contact lens.
We ended the half nil-nil but it was a different team that turned out for the second. Gavin went off, along with Chris Newbods. Our passing fell to bits and suddenly they seemed to have loads of room in midfield. Craig kept us in it with some superb diving saves and clearances but BA quickly went 2 up and our heads went down.
We couldn’t get forward to support Alex and John Murphy – despite or possibly even because of Stevie B moving into midfield. And the last two goals were inevitable, given BA’s dominance. A disappointing performance from the ‘Chels.
The roast spuds in the bar afterwards left a bitter aftertaste. Bring on London Hospitals…
