Kenchels notched up their first win of the season in a closely-fought game against Popes Grove.
With some nice football played on both sides, the game could have gone either way. But ‘Chels dug deep, defended stoutly (no offense lads)and as the second half went on, became increasingly dominant.
We went one-up in the first half when EP pounced on a superb Gavin through-ball to go one-on-one with the keeper, who watched helplessly as EP’s chip went over his head and into the back of the net. Nice one, bosso.
We stayed level for the rest of the half, with Terry B in particular having a great game at right back. They could have scored from a magnificent drive from way outside our penalty area – struck by their left midfielder – but it went screaming over the bar by about an inch.
We began the second half well, but they managed to score early on and we found ourselves level again despite increasing dominance. Alex was back from his holiday in Sciatica and gave Popes a hard time of things.
Gavin finally managed to head the winner – after his close-range shot rebounded. But it was touch and go for the last ten minutes as Popes had us under the cosh with a half dozen consecutive corners.
Mike Power, who’d been called up for goalkeeping duties at the last minute, kept us in it though – particularly with one great punched clearance.
Nice game, good result.
