Touring with the ‘Chels

A couple of clowns on the Lisbon TourThe highlight of the Chels’ year is the annual tour, which happens sometime around the second weekend of May.

It started in 1991 when the team went to play in Ireland for a weekend and has since become an event of almost epic proportions.

The team has now visited Amsterdam, Berlin, Madrid, Budapest, Paris, Rome, Sarajevo, Prague, Dublin and Lisbon – not to mention Totnes in Devon, and has played on some great and some not-so-great pitches.

These have included the home ground of Željeznicar in Sarajevo, a full-on stadium; a superb pitch at Queluz, outside Lisbon; a park pitch in the Bois de Boulogne and a field in Marion, New England. Every tour is different.

Future destinations currently being evaluated include Tallin and Zagreb. At some point, we have to get to Rio.

...and some more clowns in Lisbon We usually get to play two games – one on the Saturday and one on the Sunday – although in recent years the diehards have been going out to the tour spot a few days earlier.

Our player/manager is one Robin Moore, who works tirelessly on our behalf – particularly at tour time.

He became known as El Presidente (EP) following our tour of Lisbon, a tribute to Real Sporting Clube at Queluz, whose pitch and facilities have given him something to aim for…
