It was a tour too far, a trip we could only have dreamed of two or three years ago. For the first time, Kenchels FC abandoned the Old World for the New and headed for Boston.
El Presidente once again came up trumps.
A decent hotel, a mere corner kick from Harvard University and games against Marion United, in Cape Cod, and against Melrose Crusaders in Boston proper.
We won both games – 2-2, (with Marion insisting on a penalty shootout to decide it) and 4-1 against Melrose.A spiffing new Royal Mail sponsored kit (a bit like Barcelona) and a sensational tour T-shirt from yours truly ensure the boys were properly turned out.
There were so many memorable moments but here are a few images that stick in my mind:
Chris Newman’s deliriously happy face after he scored in the first game – a stonking strike too.
Beer and seafood in the bar after the first game, where they’d recorded the FA Cup Final for us to watch
Six-hour pool sessions at Gillian’s pool hall near Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox.
EP sprawled on a deckchair puffing a ceegar in an exclusive yachtie type club on Cape Cod – moments before we got chucked out
Chris Newbod’s shopping frenzy at Macy’s
Watching the boys’ victory dance on the shore at Cape Cod after the Marion game
